Lawn Care

Let us care for your lawn as much as you do!

Proper lawn care depends on what type of grass you have, growing conditions, and your goals for the lawn. The TurfMasters will determine what specific lawn care program will best suit your needs to bring your lawn to life!

Our Warm Season Turf Programs

Our specialists will determine the best course of action based on your specific lawn type and situation. An annual treatment program may look similar to these examples:

  • JAN: A blanket application of pre-emergent control targeting crabgrass will be applied along with broadleaf weed control and a root enhancing fertilizer.
  • FEB: A second application of pre-emergent for continued crabgrass control along with broadleaf weed control and fertilizer.
  • MAR: A third application of pre-emergent for further crabgrass control along with broadleaf weed control.
  • APR: An early treatment customized to your lawn’s needs which may include fertilizer, broadleaf weed control, iron, insecticide, and fungicide.
  • MAY: A follow up treatment customized to your lawn’s needs with an emphasis on fertility and localized weed control.

Our Rye Overseeded Bermuda program mirrors our “monthly Bermuda program” with two key exception.

  • Special care is taken when applying pre-emergents. Pre-emergant is not applied prior to overseeding. Then, we evaluate the the newly seeded rye grass to determine when pre-emergent are safe to use after the ryegrass is fully established.
  • Fertilizers are applied throughout the colder month to promote growth and greening of ryegrass.

Lime is a calcium-containing inorganic material derived from limestone that is applied to lawns in order to make them less acidic and more alkaline. While most people will consider lime as part of the fertilizer regimen, that’s not the case at all. Again, lime is best utilized to optimize the pH levels of your lawn. Additionally, the recommended pH level for each lawn differed depending on the type of grass you have.

In areas where there is a lot of rainfall, your lawn may actually lose some of its inherent calcium by way of leaching. This simply means that oversaturation of your lawn with water will actually push calcium out of your lawn and this will cause its acidity to rise. In our particular region, lawns can be subject to oversaturation of calcium, making them too high in alkaline, as well as undersaturated in calcium, resulting in an acidic lawn. However, the entire reason for applying lime to your lawn is to restore the soil’s pH level from acidic to a more favorable alkaline level. Not too much and not too little – again, this is why it’s important to ensure you’re hiring a professional lawn care company in Augusta and Columbia, as they’ll ensure your lawn’s pH levels are optimal for your specific type of grass, as well as your plants.

Relieves soil compaction by removing plugs 2-3 inches deep. Aeration penetrates the root system of the turf allowing grass plants to breathe and promotes deeper roots.

At TurfMasters, we utilize TopChoice® as a method to control fire ants and mole crickets. We will apply TopChoice® to lawns once per year and it will control fire ants for up to 12 months, while also knocking down mole crickets for 4 months and is highly effective against nuisance ant problems for 3 months. Furthermore, we highly recommend that all Zoysia lawns are treated with TopChoice® in order to prevent mole crickets, which are a well-known issue with Zoysia lawns in both Augusta, GA, and Columbia, SC.

Applying fungicide to a lawn is a common practice aimed at preventing or mitigating fungal infections that can adversely affect the health and appearance of grass. Fungicides are chemical compounds specifically designed to control and eliminate fungal pathogens, such as molds and mildews, that may thrive in humid or damp conditions. These products typically come in liquid or granular form and are applied to the lawn surface using sprayers or spreaders. Fungicides work by either inhibiting the growth of fungi or eradicating existing infections, thereby protecting the grass from diseases like brown patch or dollar spot. Regular and timely application of fungicides is crucial, especially during periods of high humidity or excessive moisture, to create a protective barrier and maintain a lush, disease-resistant lawn.

Plant growth regulators prevent cell elongation of chlorophyll in grass plants. This causes the grass blades to be more compact. The end result is vertical growth is slowed, and lateral growth of the grass is boosted, improving turf density. When applied to your lawn a PGR will make the grass grow more side to side versus upright.

We have chronicled the use of this product through visual aids to give you, our customer a better understanding of how PGRs work. We applied PGR to a Bermuda lawn and followed the results over a 4 week period.

Soil amendments, such as gypsum, play a crucial role in enhancing soil quality and promoting optimal plant growth. Gypsum, a naturally occurring mineral composed of calcium sulfate, is widely utilized in agriculture for its valuable properties. One key benefit of gypsum is its ability to improve soil structure by breaking up compacted clay soils, thereby enhancing water infiltration and root development. Additionally, gypsum helps to mitigate soil erosion and reduces nutrient runoff, contributing to environmental sustainability. Its application also aids in correcting soil acidity, promoting a balanced pH level for optimal nutrient availability. Gardeners often incorporate gypsum into their soil management practices to optimize crop yields and foster healthier, more productive ecosystems.

Insecticides are chemical substances designed to control and manage insect populations, playing a vital role in agriculture, public health, and pest control. These compounds are formulated to target and eliminate insects that pose threats to crops, livestock, or human well-being. Insecticides come in various forms, including sprays, powders, and granules. While insecticides effectively combat pests, their use requires careful consideration due to potential environmental impacts and effects on non-target organisms. Balancing the need for pest control with environmental stewardship remains a crucial aspect of utilizing insecticides responsibly in various sectors.
